Product Specification & Summary

Different from all his previous writings, this book by Professor T.K.Oommen is autobiographical in nature. The twelve chapters address variety of themes while their core concern is the author himself. He leaves behind Venmony, a sleepy village in Kerala, in his adolescence in pursuit of higher studies during pre-independence, only to find out that this remote hamlet the microcosmic Bharat has transformed like the rest of the country. His journey that straddles two world, pre-independence and post - independence India, is about social formations, priorities, the polity and his own identity and transformation. Anecdotal in nature, the book provides insights into the functioning of the academic world through the discipline of sociology not only nationally but even globally. In a world in which knowledge creation and dissemination are becoming increasingly critical, the book discusses the larger social and political contexts in which these activities are undertaken. Written in a lucid way, this book will be of interest to social scientists, scholars of media studies and those interested in general reading.

T.K.Oommen is Professor Emeritus, Centre for the Study of Social Systems, School of Social Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2008 for his pioneering research in and stellar contribution to political sociology, social transformation and education in the Indian context.
